IN the battle of pre-game entertainment between the NRL and the AFL, fans are completely divided over who won the weekend. After the Black Eyed Peas were widely condemned for their less than impressive showing on the grand final stage, Western Sydney rockers Gang of Youths were equally torched. The homegrown talent displayed their prowess on the stage as they rattled off three songs from their ARIA award-winning album, Go Farther In Lightness. But despite their huge following and incredible fireworks display, many were quick to ask just who they were.AFL legend Brendan Fevola was clearly not a fan of the choice in entertainment and gave his vote to the AFL in their pre-game choices. After meeting at Hillsong, they formed in 2012 and released a debut album in 2015. But it wasn’t until 2017 when they really started making waves.
The release of their ‘Go Farther In Lightness’ album topped the charts and secured them four ARIA awards. It also saw three songs land on Triple J’s Hottest 100 list, a feat only achieved by fellow Aussie bands Powderfinger and Chet Faker.Thankfully it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the band, whose lead singer grew up only minutes away from ANZ Stadium. For as many negative comments as there was about the NRL’s choice, there was just as many positive takes. Many were quick to point the finger at the AFL in the hopes they pay attention next year and stick with homegrown Aussie talent.
