Trent Merrin has informed Penrith he will be departing the club to take on a lucrative four-year deal with Leeds, just a week after Panthers boss Phil Gould assured fans the forward was remaining at the foot of the mountains. The Daily Telegraph reports Merrin made the decision after a meeting with Gould and further negotiations with Leeds. The 29-year-old will
leave with two years remaining on his contract, linking up with former Rabbitohs assistant David Furner. The move is expected to be officially announced on Thursday night.Gould took to Twitter last Wednesday to reaffirm Merrin's position after speculation had him sealed and signed with the Rhinos. On Monday, newly-appointed coach Ivan Cleary threw his support behind Merrin's decision and was delighted to have the experienced veteran lead his forward pack.“It’s Trent’s decision on whether he stayed or he didn’t,’’ Cleary said.
