The real reason Cameron Smith dropped his retirement bombshell after Storm’s preliminary final win

Cameron Smith’s retirement bombshell has been revealed as a brilliant hoax by the NRL legend’s father. Speaking to The Courier Mail ahead of his son’s record-breaking 36th NRL finals appearance on Sunday night, Wayne Smith revealed the Storm hooker suggested he may retire in order to take the heat off teammate Billy Slater. Slater was under the pump from reporters because of his shoulder charge on Sharks winger Sosaia Feki.
Knowing the nature of the media as well as he does, Smith simply mentioned he would think about retiring after the grand final to divert their attention, according to his dad. Asked if Cameron would be playing on in 2019, Wayne Smith was emphatic. “100 percent,” he said. For his part, Cameron wasn’t doing anything to dispel the rumours about his future earlier in the week, as he refused to confirm whether or not Sunday’s grand final against the Sydney Roosters would be his last NRL match.
